The crowd parted as General Vance marched onto the concrete pad, flanked by a squad of fully armed, elite military police. The atmosphere shifted instantly from a cruel spectacle to a high-stakes standoff. Jason’s smug expression faltered for a fraction of a second before he quickly smoothed his features, plastering on his trademark charming smile. He stepped forward to greet the General, acting as if he were the one in charge.

“General Vance, thank goodness you're here,” Jason said, gesturing dismissively toward Lauren. “This insubordinate clerk was caught red-handed attempting to steal classified logistics files. We were simply administering necessary field discipline to keep the peace.”

General Vance didn’t even look at Jason. His stern eyes locked onto Lauren, assessing her bound hands and the bruised skin on her wrists. He walked right past the contractor, his heavy boots clicking sharply against the concrete. The two dirty soldiers holding Lauren immediately released her, their faces turning pale as they realized the gravity of their mistake.

“Are you unharmed, Major?” General Vance asked, his voice dripping with suppressed rage.

Jason’s jaw dropped. The color drained from his face as he stared at Lauren, then at the General. “Major?” Jason stammered, his confident demeanor shattering. “What do you mean, Major? She’s a low-level administrative clerk! There’s been a mistake!”

Lauren stood tall, stretching her aching shoulders as she looked down at the man who had tried to destroy her. “The only mistake was yours, Jason,” she said calmly. General Vance turned to face the stunned crowd.

“This is Major Lauren Vance, Lead Undercover Investigator for the Criminal Investigation Division,” the General announced. “And she has spent the last six months gathering evidence on your massive black-market fuel smuggling operation.”
