Previously: When a traumatized military dog was scheduled to be put down, a grieving soldier took him to a harsh prison for one last chance at survival.

The Ghost of the Past

The heavy iron gate groaned as it swung open, revealing an inmate dressed in bright orange scrubs. As the man stepped into the bright sunlight, Thomas felt his breath catch in his throat. His blood ran cold. The inmate walking toward them with a defiant, heavy stride was Bobby Vance. Bobby was the younger brother of Sergeant Miller—the man Thomas had failed to save.

After Miller’s death, Bobby had spiraled into a self-destructive path of crime, eventually landing a lengthy sentence at Blackwood. He had refused all of Thomas’s letters and calls, blaming him entirely for his brother's demise. Now, fate had thrown them together in the harshest place on earth.

Bobby stopped ten feet away, his jaw clenched, his eyes burning with pure hatred. He looked from Thomas to the German Shepherd, his chest heaving with sudden emotion.

"You," Bobby spat, his fists trembling at his sides. "You let my brother die in that sand, and now you have the nerve to bring his dog to my prison? Is this some kind of sick joke?"

Rex immediately picked up on the explosive hostility. The dog’s posture changed instantly; his hackles raised, his tail went stiff, and a low, terrifying growl rumbled from his chest. On the elevated catwalks, three guards instantly raised their rifles, aiming directly at the agitated animal.

"Keep that beast under control!" Warden Marcus barked, his voice sharp as a whip.

But Bobby didn't back down. Driven by years of agonizing grief, he took a step closer, completely ignoring the danger. "Go ahead, let him lunge," Bobby dared, tears spilling down his cheeks. "It’ll just prove you destroy everything you touch." In a blind fit of rage, Bobby lunged forward to strike Thomas. The sudden movement triggered Rex’s defense mechanisms. With a powerful roar, the dog broke free, the leash slipping from Thomas's sweaty hands as Rex launched himself straight at Bobby.
