Previously: When Warden Marcus scheduled a traumatized military dog to be put down, young soldier Thomas risked everything to step into the prison yard and prove the dog wasn't a monster.

The Shield of Love

The young guard’s hand trembled as he aimed his pistol at the charging German Shepherd. Gunner was seconds away from attacking, driven by pure, blind panic. Knowing there was no time to run, Thomas did the only thing he could. He threw himself forward, sliding across the gravel and wrapping his body completely over the dog, shielding Gunner with his own back.

"Don't shoot!"
Thomas screamed, squeezing his eyes shut.
"Shoot me instead!"

Silence fell over the yard once more. The guard slowly lowered his weapon, his face pale. Beneath Thomas, Gunner felt the warmth of the human shield. The dog's frantic breathing began to slow, the familiar scent of woodland camo and the soldier's calm heartbeat grounding him from the flashback. Gunner let out a long sigh and rested his heavy head on Thomas's shoulder.

Warden Marcus walked forward, his cane clicking rhythmically against the concrete. He looked down at the soldier and the dog, still clinging to each other in the dirt. A rare, soft expression crossed the warden's stern features. He slipped his aviators back on and tapped his cane on the ground.

"Get up, soldier,"
Marcus said quietly.
"It seems my paperwork was filed incorrectly. I’ll write down that this dog was deemed untamable and had to be... disposed of. But you need to get him out of my sight before I change my mind."

Thomas looked up, tears of relief streaming down his face. He stood up, and Gunner rose with him, staying glued to his side. The dog was finally safe. Years of war and grief had broken them both, but in each other, they had found the strength to heal. Sometimes, the deepest wounds cannot be cured by medicine, but by the unconditional love of someone who refuses to give up on you.

The End
