"I'm not coming to the dinner, Dad," Chloe said, her voice dripping with ice. "And I'm never coming to any of your dinners again. I know what you did to Marcus. I have the letter. I have your assistant's note."

"Do not call me again," she said firmly, and hung up.

She turned the phone completely off and slid it into her bag. Then, she looked up at Marcus, a genuine smile breaking through her tears for the first time in three years. She reached across the table and took his hand, his warm fingers wrapping around hers with familiar comfort.

They walked out of the diner together, stepping into the cool night air. The city was still loud and chaotic, but the heavy burden they had carried for years was gone.
