Previously: When Chloe ran into her ex-boyfriend Marcus on a rattling New York subway, she expected awkward silence. Instead, a chilling question about fate led to a truth that shattered her entire family.

The Battered Envelope

They stepped off the train together, moving like ghosts through the bustling crowd of the station. Neither of them spoke until they reached a quiet, dimly lit diner a block away. They slid into a vinyl booth in the far corner, away from the windows. A waitress dropped off two mugs of black coffee, but neither of them touched them. The silence between them had shifted from awkward tension to a heavy, suffocating dread.

Chloe crossed her arms, trying to shield herself from the emotions threatening to break through. "Why now, Marcus?" she asked, her voice trembling. "You walked away three years ago without a single word. You let me believe you cheated on me."

Marcus looked at her, his eyes filled with a deep, agonizing sorrow. "I never walked away, Chloe. I was forced out." He reached into the pocket of his dark hoodie and pulled out a worn, yellowed envelope, sliding it across the table toward her.

Chloe stared at it. It was a letter addressed to her old apartment, stamped with "Return to Sender." But it was the sticky note attached to the back that made her blood run cold. It bore the official logo of her father’s private security firm. Written in the precise handwriting of her father’s personal assistant were the words: "The boy has been dealt with. The girl believes the setup. He won't be coming back."

Her hands shook as she picked it up. "What is this?" Chloe whispered, her voice barely audible over the low hum of the diner.

Marcus leaned forward, his voice a desperate whisper. "Your father cornered me three years ago. He told me that if I didn't leave you, he would ruin my family's business. When I refused to back down, he staged the entire thing. He hired a woman to plant her clothes in my apartment and made sure you found them. When I tried to reach out to you to explain, his security team intercepted me. They threatened my mother's life, Chloe. I had to protect her."

The world seemed to spin around Chloe. The man she had hated for years was innocent, and the father she adored was a monster who had systematically destroyed her happiness for the sake of his own corporate ambitions.
