Leaving the restaurant an hour later, Arthur walked into the biting wind. As he reached for his car keys, his shoe struck a small metallic object hidden in the fresh snow. He knelt and picked up a tarnished silver locket. When he brushed away the ice, his heart stopped. Engraved on the back were initials he knew all too well: S.M.—Sarah Miller, his younger sister who had disappeared a decade ago after a bitter family feud.

With trembling fingers, Arthur pried the locket open. Inside was a faded photograph of Sarah, laughing in their childhood backyard. Panic and guilt seized him. She told me to keep it safe. She said her brother gave it to her before she had to go away." He paused, trembling. "But mommy got very sick. She passed away last month. My name is Toby."

The realization hit Arthur like a physical blow. This starving child was his own nephew, the son of the sister he had failed to protect. He wrapped his expensive wool coat around Toby, weeping openly as he carried him to his car and rushed him to the nearest hospital. But the nightmare was only beginning.
