Before Rachel could make her decision, the diner doors flew open. Matthew Sterling strode in, flanked by two local police officers. A smug, triumphant smile played on his lips as he looked down at the maid and the elderly butler.

"I knew you'd run straight to your little savior, Rachel," Matthew sneered. "Officers, there she is. And arrest the butler too, for aiding a thief."

The officers stepped forward, handcuffs clinking. Rachel felt her heart hammer against her ribs. She looked at Walter, prepared to slip the USB drive into her pocket and hide it, willing to sacrifice herself to save his wife. But Walter stood up straight, his shoulders square, projecting a dignity he hadn't shown in years.

"Take the drive, Officer," Walter said in a loud, clear voice, handing the USB to the lead policeman. "It contains the unedited security logs from yesterday afternoon, showing Matthew Sterling and his accomplice staging the theft."

Matthew laughed aloud, a harsh, grating sound.

"You fool, Walter," Matthew whispered menacingly. "Think of your wife. One phone call to my mother, and her treatment stops today."

Walter looked Matthew dead in the eye, a calm smile spreading across his face.

"I called the state medical board this morning, Matthew," Walter replied calmly. "My wife was accepted into the university's fully funded clinical trial. Your mother no longer holds any power over us."

The color drained from Matthew's face. The police officer plugged the USB drive into his rugged tablet. Within moments, the video played, clearly showing Matthew's girlfriend pulling off the maid's blonde wig and laughing with Matthew as they emptied the safe. The officer looked up, his expression hardening as he turned toward Matthew.

Matthew was handcuffed on the spot, his protests ignored as he was led out of the diner in disgrace. Rachel burst into tears of relief, wrapping her arms around Walter in a tight embrace. Justice had finally prevailed, proving that even the heaviest chains of wealth and manipulation can be broken by the simple power of truth and loyalty.
