The Accusation

The atmosphere inside the opulent dining room of the Sterling mansion was suffocating. Sunlight filtered through the towering stained-glass windows, casting long, dramatic shadows across the mahogany table. But the warmth of the luxury lighting did nothing to ease the icy tension gripping the room. Marie, a thirty-three-year-old maid with a neat blonde bob, was on her knees. She clutched her six-year-old daughter, Emma, who was weeping silently against her mother's chest.

Standing above them was Diana Sterling, dressed in a stunning dark green silk dress that seemed to highlight her cold, aristocratic demeanor. Her face was contorted with rage as she pointed an accusing finger down at Marie. "You stole from us!" Diana shouted, her voice echoing off the high ceilings.

Marie looked up, her face tear-stained and pale with shock. She desperately shook her head, tightening her grip on her trembling daughter.

"I would never betray this family, Mrs. Sterling. I have worked here for three years. I have been loyal!"
she pleaded, her voice cracking with emotion.

Beside Diana, her husband Andrew stood with his arms crossed over his dark knit sweater. His expression was completely flat, devoid of any empathy. He didn't even look at the crying child.

"Just get her out of here,"
Andrew stated coldly, turning his gaze away as if Marie and her daughter were nothing but a nuisance.

Thomas, the elderly butler, stood silently in the corner. He held a security tablet, his eyes cold and detached. He stepped forward and showed Marie the screen. A grainy, black-and-white security feed played on loop, showing a pair of hands in a maid's uniform lifting a diamond necklace from a velvet lined box. Marie stared in horror. The sleeve matched her uniform perfectly, but she knew she had never touched that jewelry. Before she could speak, Diana spoke with finality:

"Get out. No excuses."
