The silence in the botanical garden was broken only by the rustling of the wind through the orchids. I stood frozen in my white ballgown, my eyes darting between David's pale, terrified face and the two innocent little girls who looked so much like him. Elise reached into her small clutch and pulled out a crisp white envelope, holding it out to David. He refused to touch it, his hands shaking at his sides.

"I didn't want to ruin your day, Sarah," Elise said, turning her sharp gaze to me. "But David left me when I was pregnant. He told me he wasn't ready to be a father, changed his number, and vanished. I raised Lily and Grace entirely on my own while he lived his perfect life."
