The Smug Soldier and the Veteran

The Nevada desert heat was unforgiving, baking the dusty shooting range under a relentless midday sun. Arthur walked with a slow, deliberate pace, his worn canvas coat heavy on his shoulders. At seventy-one, his rugged face was a map of a lifetime spent in the shadows of military service, his grey hair cropped short. Under his arm, he carried a battered, unmarked rifle case. As he approached the registration counter, the loud, boisterous laughter of active-duty soldiers filled the air. They were young, outfitted in pristine tactical gear, boasting about their scores as if they had already conquered the world.

Among them was Cole, a thirty-one-year-old sergeant wearing a dark combat vest. He had a reputation for arrogance, and seeing the old man, his eyes lit up with malicious amusement. Cole stepped forward, blocking Arthur's path to the counter. He folded his arms, a smug smile plastered across his face.

"Are you here to compete? Or to beg for alms?" Cole sneered, his voice carrying across the quiet range.

The other soldiers chuckled, waiting to see the old man crumble. Arthur didn't flinch. His expression remained stoic, weathered like the desert rocks. As he reached into his pocket to pay the registration fee, his sleeve slid back, revealing a faded black wolf tattoo on his forearm. Cole glanced at it and laughed dismissively, completely ignorant of its meaning.

Without a word, Arthur walked to the firing line. The wind was howling, a treacherous fifteen knots. He unzipped his case, revealing an old scoped rifle. Cole followed, still mocking him. Arthur adjusted his stance, loaded a single round, and looked down the scope.

"I only need one shot," Arthur said calmly.

He pulled the trigger. The crack of the rifle echoed across the canyon. Moments later, the electronic spotter beeped, confirming a perfect bullseye at nine hundred yards in a deadly crosswind. Cole’s jaw dropped. He stared at the screen, then at the wolf tattoo, realizing what it meant. A single tear of sheer disbelief and sudden terror rolled down his cheek under his military cap.
