Previously: When a smug active-duty soldier mocked a weathered 71-year-old veteran at a desert shooting range, he had no idea he was challenging a legendary ghost unit sniper.

A Commander’s Salute

The silence that followed Arthur’s shot was heavy, broken only by the hum of the wind. Cole stood frozen, his eyes darting between the digital target screen and the faded wolf tattoo on Arthur's arm. He knew what that symbol meant now. It was the emblem of the Ghost Unit, a legendary, highly classified sniper division from the Vietnam era. They were ghosts, soldiers who undertook missions so dangerous they were never officially recorded. Cole’s own instructors had spoken of them in hushed, reverent tones.

Before Cole could find his voice, heavy footsteps crunched on the gravel behind them. Colonel Vance, the base commander, stepped onto the range. He had heard the shot and came to investigate. When he saw Arthur standing there, the Colonel stopped dead in his tracks. His face drained of color, and his chest heaved.

To the utter shock of Cole and the other recruits, Colonel Vance stood at attention and delivered a crisp, trembling salute to the old man in the weathered canvas coat.

"Sir, we had no idea you were still in the area," Vance said, his voice thick with emotion. "It is an honor to stand in your presence."

Arthur slowly lowered his rifle, offering a small, respectful nod. Colonel Vance then turned his gaze to Cole. The warmth vanished from his eyes, replaced by an icy, terrifying fury.

"Sergeant Cole, do you have any idea who you just insulted?" Vance growled, stepping dangerously close to the young soldier. "This is Master Sergeant Arthur Pendelton. He is the reason half of the tactics you learn today even exist. And thirty years ago, in a jungle thousands of miles from here, he pulled my bleeding body out of a mortar zone while taking fire from three different directions."

Cole’s heart sank into his boots. He looked at Arthur, his face pale with fear and shame. He had not just mocked an old man; he had humiliated a living legend who had saved his own commander’s life.
