The rain was relentless, drumming against the glass of Midnight Harbor Cafe. Inside, the warm amber glow offered a stark contrast to the cold, dark streets of downtown. Leo, a young waiter with messy auburn hair, was wiping down the counter, his mind drifting as his shift neared its end. Behind him, Thomas, the stern manager in a sharp gray vest, was meticulously counting the evening's register. Suddenly, a heavy thud against the front window shattered the quiet. Leo looked up to see a man in a dark leather jacket collapse against the wet glass. His face was bruised, his clothes soaked, and his eyes filled with sheer exhaustion. Leo dropped his rag, his instincts screaming at him to help.

A Cruel Ultimatum

Before Leo could take a step, Thomas's cold voice cut through the air. "Don't get involved. We have customers," he warned. Leo turned, disbelief etching his features.

"Something's wrong with him,"
he insisted, ignoring the warning. He pushed past the manager and ran out into the pouring rain. Kneeling on the slick sidewalk, Leo gently supported the trembling man.
"Sir? Can you hear me?"
he asked. The man, Marcus, managed a weak whisper,
"I'm okay."
Leo didn't believe him.
"Take some water,"
he urged, handing over a small bottle. Marcus clutched it, whispering,
"Thank you. Thank you."
Leo held him steady.
"Stay with me."
From the warm doorway, Thomas yelled,
"Get back inside!"
Leo looked back, shouting,
"He needs help!"
Thomas's face hardened.
"Then you're fired."
Marcus looked up at Leo, his eyes reflecting a deep, unexpected gratitude.
"When nobody else would..."
he murmured. Thomas sneered from the dry interior,
"Not my problem."
As Leo stood his ground, Marcus pulled out a phone, his voice suddenly firm.
"Yeah. I'm outside Midnight Harbor Cafe."
