A Hero in Black Gloves

The lunchtime rush at the Route 9 Diner was always chaotic, but today felt exceptionally overwhelming. Seventeen-year-old Toby wiped the sweat from his forehead with the back of his arm, his black gloved hands flipping burgers on the roaring grill. Despite his young age, Toby was the most reliable line cook in the kitchen. He worked long, exhausting shifts to help support his mother, always keeping his head down. But the peace didn't last. From a brightly lit booth near the open kitchen, a sudden, terrifying gasp broke through the clatter of plates.

A young Caucasian boy named Leo, wearing a green striped sweater, was clutching his throat. His face was turning a dangerous shade of blue. He was choking. While other customers froze in panic, Toby didn't hesitate. He dropped his spatula and sprinted out of the kitchen. But before he could reach the booth, a heavy hand gripped his shoulder. It was Marcus, the bald, ruthless manager of the diner, his face twisted in anger.

"Get back to work!"
Marcus yelled, his voice booming over the diner's chatter.

Toby shook off the manager's grip. He couldn't let a child die for the sake of a fast-food order. Rushing to the booth, Toby stood behind Leo, wrapped his arms around the boy's waist, and performed the Heimlich maneuver with practiced precision. After two tense thrusts, a piece of hard candy flew out of Leo’s mouth, and the boy gasped, drawing in sweet, life-saving air.

As the boy's father, Arthur, hugged his son tightly, Toby took a step back, breathing a sigh of relief. But the peace was short-lived. Marcus stepped forward, his eyes cold and unforgiving.

"You left your station during a rush. You're fired,"
Marcus sneered. But before Toby could process the devastating news, Arthur stood up. He was a middle-aged man in a plaid flannel shirt, but his demeanor radiated authority. He grabbed Toby's arm gently and looked him in the eye.
"You saved my son,"
Arthur said. He then raised his mobile phone to his ear and spoke urgently.
"This young man just saved a child's life. Yes, this is Dr. Michael Carter."
