Fired for Saving a Choking Child, a Young Cook Gets a Life-Changing Surprise
Previously: When seventeen-year-old Toby rushed to save a choking boy in a busy diner, his heartless boss fired him on the spot. But the boy's father held immense power.
The Power of a Phone Call
Marcus let out a mocking laugh, completely unfazed by the doctor's phone call.
"I don't care if you're the President of the United States,"Marcus spat, crossing his arms.
"This kid violated safety protocols and abandoned his post. He's done here. Pack your things, Toby, before I call the police for trespassing."
Toby felt his heart sink into his stomach. This job was the only thing keeping his family afloat. He looked down at his black gloves, tears of frustration stinging his eyes. But Dr. Michael Carter wasn't about to let a hero be praised with a pink slip. He finished his brief phone call, slid his device into his pocket, and turned his full attention to the arrogant manager.
"You must be Marcus,"Dr. Carter said, his voice deadly calm.
"You clearly don't know who I am, nor do you understand how this community works. I am the Chief of Surgery at the county hospital, but more importantly, I am the majority shareholder of the commercial real estate firm that owns this entire plaza. Your lease is up for renewal next month."
The color instantly drained from Marcus's bald head. He stammered, trying to find his words as the realization of his mistake began to dawn on him. The diner's customers, who had been watching the drama unfold, began to whisper and point. Marcus tried to backtrack, offering a weak smile.
"Sir, I was just looking out for kitchen safety. You have to understand—"
Dr. Carter cut him off with a sharp wave of his hand. He turned to Toby, his expression softening.
"Toby, is it? Why are you working in a place like this when you clearly have the instincts of a first responder?"Toby swallowed hard, explaining that he wanted to study medicine but couldn't afford the tuition. Dr. Carter smiled warmly, a plan already forming in his mind.
