A Father Returns Home Early and Finds His Daughter Kneeling in a Maid Uniform
A Dark Secret in a Gilded Cage
The cold marble floor of the penthouse foyer was relentless, but it was nothing compared to the chill in Grace’s heart. Clad in a scratchy grey linen maid dress that felt like a badge of humiliation, the nineteen-year-old sobbed silently as she pushed the heavy scrubbing brush. Tears dripped onto the glossy white surface, smudging the reflection of the grand glass-paneled staircase. Behind her sat Diane, her stepmother of just six months, draped in a royal blue satin gown, sipping champagne and watching with cold amusement.
“Missed a spot near the baseboard, Grace,” Diane murmured, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. “If you want to keep living under this roof, you have to earn your keep. Your father doesn't need to know about our little arrangement.”
Grace’s hands trembled. Ever since her mother passed away, Robert had tried his best to provide for her, but Diane’s arrival had changed everything. To Robert, Diane was a loving, sophisticated partner. To Grace, she was a tormentor who systematically stripped away her dignity the moment Robert left for his frequent business trips.
Suddenly, the heavy front double doors swung open. The sound echoed through the cavernous foyer, freezing both women in place. Robert, dressed in his charcoal pinstripe suit, walked in, his suitcase in hand. His flight had been canceled due to a storm, bringing him home a day early.
Grace looked up, her tear-stained face pale with shock and sudden hope. “Dad! Dad, she’s making me—” she cried out, her voice cracking with months of suppressed pain.
Diane sprang to her feet, her face instantly morphing into a mask of bubbly affection.
“Robert! You’re home early, darling!”she squealed, stepping forward to block his view of the girl on the floor.
But Robert’s eyes bypassed his wife entirely. His gaze locked onto his daughter, kneeling in a maid's uniform, holding a dirty scrub brush. His face hardened, eyes turning icy.
“Why is my daughter kneeling?”he demanded, his voice dangerously low.
