Previously: When wealthy businessman Robert returned home early from a business trip, he expected a quiet evening. Instead, he found his beloved daughter Grace on her knees, crying while scrubbing the marble floor.

The Mask Slips Away

Diane’s laugh was high-pitched and nervous. She reached out to touch Robert’s arm, but he coldly stepped back, refusing her touch.

“Oh, honey, don’t be so dramatic,”
Diane stammered, her eyes darting around the luxurious room.
“Grace and I were just playing a game! She wanted to understand the value of hard work, didn’t you, Grace?”

Grace stood up slowly, her knees shaking. She wiped her eyes, looking at her father. For months, Diane had threatened that if Grace complained, she would ruin Robert's business using her family's political connections. But looking at the fierce protectiveness in her father’s eyes, Grace knew she couldn't stay silent anymore.

“It’s not a game, Dad,”
Grace said, her voice growing stronger.
“The moment you leave, she locks me out of my bedroom. She makes me sleep in the laundry room and forces me to clean this entire penthouse. She said if I told you, she’d destroy your company.”

Diane’s face contorted with rage, dropping all pretense of the loving stepmother.

“You ungrateful little brat! How dare you lie to your father! Robert, you can't possibly believe this dramatic teenager over me!”

Robert walked over to Grace, gently taking the scrub brush from her hands and throwing it onto the marble floor. He pulled his daughter into a tight embrace.

“I knew something was wrong,”
Robert whispered, his voice trembling with a mix of guilt and fury.
“I noticed the security cameras in the hallway were disconnected every time I left. Did you think I wouldn't notice, Diane?”

Diane scoffed, crossing her arms.

“You have no proof of anything. It’s her word against mine.”

But Robert reached into his pocket and pulled out his smartphone. “I didn't rely on the main security system,” he said quietly. “I installed a hidden camera in the foyer clock last month because Grace seemed so withdrawn. I’ve seen everything, Diane. Every single day of it.”
