Cast Out Into the Cold

The salty ocean breeze whipped Olivia's auburn hair across her face, but she barely felt the chill. Clad in a simple white slip dress and wrapped in a beige knit shawl, her hands instinctively cradled her swollen belly. At thirty-four, pregnant and heartbroken, she stood on the expansive concrete driveway of the luxurious coastal mansion she had called home for five years. Around her feet lay the chaotic wreckage of her life: silk blouses, shoes, and precious photographs scattered across the hard ground like trash.

At the top of the grand stone steps stood Richard, her ex-husband, wearing a crisp grey linen shirt. With a cold, mocking sneer, he hoisted her heavy leather suitcase and hurled it down the stairs. It burst open upon impact, spilling the rest of her belongings onto the pavement. Beside him stood Sarah, a younger woman wearing a vibrant floral print wrap dress, her arm slid possessively through Richard's. Two burly security guards stood like statues in the background, ensuring Olivia could not step back inside.

"Olivia,"

Richard called out, his voice dripping with smug satisfaction.

"You've overstayed your welcome. This house belongs to someone who actually knows how to keep a man happy. Now get off my property before I have you arrested for trespassing."

Sarah giggled, leaning her head on Richard's shoulder. Tears of humiliation and anger spilled down Olivia's cheeks. She looked at the man she had loved, the man who had promised to cherish her, now discarding her and their unborn child without a second thought. Kneeling among her ruined clothes, her trembling hands searched the open suitcase until they clamped around her phone. With shaking fingers, she dialed a number she hadn't called in years. As soon as the line connected, her voice hardened with a sudden, icy resolve.

"Dad, come get me,"

Olivia whispered, her eyes locked on Richard's smug face.

"And bring the legal."

Richard and Sarah exchanged amused glances, laughing at what they assumed was a pathetic plea for help. But their smiles withered instantly as the roar of powerful engines echoed down the private coastal road. Two massive black SUVs tore up the driveway, screeching to a halt just inches from the mansion's steps, their headlights blinding in the golden hour sun.
