Cast Out into the Cold

The gravel of the sprawling mansion’s driveway bit into Olivia’s bare feet, but the physical pain was nothing compared to the agony tearing through her chest. At thirty-three years old and six months pregnant, she stood humiliated in the golden hour sun. Her long brown hair whipped across her face as she looked down at her life scattered across the brick path—dresses, shoes, and baby clothes strewn about like garbage.

"Get off my property, Olivia. You don’t belong here anymore," Richard sneered.

Richard stood at the top of the grand stone steps, looking incredibly smug in his light grey button-down shirt. Beside him stood Sarah, a younger woman wearing a peach-colored sundress, her arm wrapped triumphantly around Richard’s waist. They looked like the perfect couple, completely indifferent to the pregnant woman they had just cast out of her own home.

Olivia clutched her charcoal grey wrap sweater tightly around her white maxi dress, trying to shield her unborn child from their cruel gazes. Just months ago, Richard had promised her forever. But as soon as his business began to take off, his promises evaporated, replaced by cold indifference and, eventually, Sarah.

"Olivia, just go. You’re making a scene," Sarah added, a mockingly sweet smile plastered on her face.

Wiping the hot tears from her cheeks, Olivia knelt down among her scattered clothes. Her hands trembled as she searched through a spilled suitcase, her fingers finally closing around her phone. She didn’t cry out, nor did she beg. Instead, she dialed a number she hadn't called in years, a number she had avoided out of pride.

"Dad," Olivia whispered into the receiver, her voice shaking but resolute. "Come get me. And Dad... bring the legal team."

Richard laughed aloud, sharing a mocking glance with Sarah. They believed she was bluffing. But their laughter was abruptly cut short. A deafening roar of engines echoed down the quiet suburban street. Two massive black SUVs tore through the mansion’s iron gates, screeching to a dramatic halt on the brick-paved driveway, their headlights blindingly bright in the evening sun.
