The Lost Locket

The afternoon sun filtered through the grand arched windows of the Bistro de L'Étoile, casting a warm, golden glow over the white tablecloths. Clara adjusted her beige uniform jacket with a sigh. It had been a long shift, and her feet ached, but she kept a polite smile on her face as she approached table four. Seated there was an elegant couple who looked like they belonged in a high-society magazine. The woman, Victoria, wore a silky cream blouse and a stunning pearl necklace, her blonde hair swept into a flawless updo. Her companion, Arthur, looked equally distinguished in a sharp dark suit.

As Clara carefully set down the fine china plates, her right hand brushed near Victoria’s wine glass. On the back of Clara's hand was a tiny, faded heart-shaped birthmark, which she had outlined with a delicate tattoo years ago. In an instant, the atmosphere at the table shattered. Victoria’s polite smile vanished, replaced by a look of sheer, breathless horror.

"May I see your birth mark?" Victoria gasped, her voice trembling.

Before Clara could answer, Victoria stood up frantically, knocking her chair back. She reached across the table and grabbed Clara’s arms with desperate, shaking hands. Clara was startled, but the raw pain in the older woman's eyes made her stay. She looked down at her arm.

"Of course," Clara whispered. "I've had it since I was a baby."

Victoria stared at the tiny mark, and a sob ripped from her throat. She dropped to her knees on the polished marble floor, completely ignoring her expensive clothes. Sobs racked her body as she frantically rummaged through her black designer handbag. Finally, she pulled out a silver, heart-shaped locket pendant.

"Do you have one like this?" Victoria wept, holding it up.

Clara felt the room spin. With trembling fingers, she reached into the collar of her uniform and pulled out the silver locket she had worn her entire life. It was a perfect, identical match. Shocked, Clara looked down at the weeping woman.

"How do you know about that?" Clara asked, her voice barely a whisper.

Clara asked, her voice barely a whisper.
