Previously: When wealthy Victoria spotted a unique heart-shaped mark on her waitress's hand, a twenty-year-old mystery began to unfold, leading to a truth she never expected.

A Dark Conspiracy

Before Victoria could answer, Arthur’s face turned a ghostly shade of pale. He stood up abruptly, his polite demeanor completely vanishing. He grabbed Victoria by the arm, pulling her away from Clara with a harshness that shocked the onlookers. He muttered something about his wife having a medical episode and dragged the weeping woman out of the restaurant, leaving Clara standing alone, frozen in disbelief.

Clara couldn't let it go. For twenty years, she had wondered who she was. That evening, using the name on their credit card receipt, Clara tracked their address to a massive, gated mansion in the city's most exclusive neighborhood. She slipped past the security gates and crept through the manicured gardens, guided by the warm light spilling from a first-floor study window.

She pressed her back against the brick wall and looked inside. Arthur was pacing the room, his tie loosened, speaking frantically on his phone. Clara leaned closer to the glass, her heart hammering in her chest.

"I don't care how you do it, just get her out of the city!" Arthur hissed into the phone. "Victoria saw the locket and the birthmark. If she realizes that the girl didn't die in the hospital fire twenty years ago, she'll discover everything. She'll realize I paid the nurse to take the baby away so I could claim the family inheritance!"

Clara covered her mouth to stifle a gasp. Her entire life had been a lie. Her own stepfather had stolen her away as an infant, leaving her to grow up in a system of cold foster homes, all for the sake of money. Just as Clara felt her knees weaken, she saw the study door swing open. Victoria walked in, her eyes red from crying, holding her identical locket.

"Who are you talking to, Arthur?" Victoria demanded, her voice cold with suspicion.
