The afternoon sun filtered weakly through the trees as Thomas pulled his truck into the driveway. It had been a long, exhausting shift at the construction site, but he had stopped by the grocery store to pick up some fresh vegetables and ingredients for dinner. He wanted to surprise his wife, Sarah, and his elderly mother, Helen, who had moved in with them six months ago after her health began to decline. Thomas smiled, imagining a peaceful family dinner in their cozy, wallpapered kitchen.

As he unlocked the front door and stepped into the hallway, an unsettling silence hung in the air. Then, a faint, muffled sound reached his ears. It sounded like sobbing. Frowning, Thomas set his keys down and walked quietly toward the kitchen. The door was slightly ajar. He peered inside, and his heart instantly plummeted into his stomach.

The kitchen was a chaotic mess, with dirty dishes piled high. Sitting at the wooden table was his mother, Helen. Her wire-rimmed spectacles were crooked on her nose, and her knitted beige shawl trembled as tears streamed down her wrinkled face. Standing over her was Sarah, her green striped blouse disheveled, her face twisted in a sneer of pure malice. Sarah was aggressively forcing a spoonful of cold food into Helen's mouth.

"You old hag, eat this!" Sarah spat, her voice dripping with venom.
