Sarah slumped against the refrigerator, gasping for breath, her eyes darting around the room like a trapped animal. The mask of the loving, patient wife had completely slipped, replaced by a cold, defensive glare. Thomas turned his back on her for a moment, kneeling beside his mother. "I've got you, Mom. You're safe now," Thomas whispered, his voice cracking.

"Explain yourself," he growled. "How could you do this to her?"

"You don't understand, Thomas!" she cried, trying to sound like the victim. "She is impossible! She refuses to eat, she spits at me, she's losing her mind! I just lost my temper. I've been under so much stress taking care of her while you're at work!"

Among the makeup and receipts, a thick manila envelope had slid out. Written across the top in bold letters was the name of a local law firm.

Thomas stepped past Sarah, ignoring her protests as he grabbed the envelope and pulled out the documents inside. His blood ran cold as he read the pages. It was a power of attorney agreement and a deed transfer for Helen's beloved home—the house Thomas's father had built. At the bottom of the page was Helen's signature, but it was shaky, uneven, and clearly forced. Next to it was a medical evaluation form, forged to declare Helen mentally incompetent.
