Kevin had always considered himself a lucky man. He had a stable job, a cozy pine-paneled home in the suburbs, and a wife, Stephanie, who had graciously agreed to let his elderly mother, Irene, move in with them. Irene, suffering from early-stage dementia, required constant patience and care. Every morning, Stephanie would kiss Kevin goodbye, promising to look after Irene with the utmost tenderness. Kevin trusted his wife completely, believing his mother was in the safest hands possible.

But on a chilly Tuesday afternoon, a sudden cancellation at work allowed Kevin to head home early. He decided to surprise them, stopping by the local market to pick up fresh groceries. As he stepped through the front door, the house was unusually quiet, save for a muffled, distressful whimpering coming from the warm, pine-paneled kitchen. "You old hag, eat this!" Stephanie hissed, shoving the spoon brutally against Irene's lips.

"Stop, please, stop!" Irene whimpered, tears streaming down her wrinkled cheeks.

Kevin froze in absolute shock. The paper bags slipped from his hands, spilling oranges and cans across the linoleum floor. The sound shattered the tension. Rage, hot and blinding, surged through Kevin’s veins. He charged forward with a guttural roar.

"Get away from her!" Kevin shouted, lunging at his wife.

He violently grabbed Stephanie by the shoulders and yanked her back. Stephanie shrieked, losing her footing as Kevin shoved her back against the refrigerator, kicking away a fallen can to block her path. The illusion of his happy home was shattered forever.
