Stephanie gasped for air, pressed hard against the stainless-steel refrigerator. Her eyes, once filled with calculated cruelty, now flared with defensive anger. She adjusted her yellow dress, attempting to regain her composure, though her hands trembled. "Are you insane, Kevin?" she screamed, pointing an accusing finger at the trembling elderly woman. "She was refusing to eat! I was just trying to help her! You have no idea what I go through every single day while you're off working!"

But Kevin wasn't listening to her lies anymore. He rushed to his mother's side, dropping to his knees. Irene was shaking violently, clutching her green cardigan as if it were a shield. Kevin gently wiped the food from her chin, his heart breaking at the sheer terror in his mother's eyes.

"I'm so sorry, Mom. I'm so sorry I wasn't here,"

he whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. Irene could only cling to his sleeve, too terrified to speak.

Kevin stood up, turning to face the woman he thought he knew.

"Get out,"

he said, his voice dangerously low.

"Pack your things and get out of my house before I call the police."

Stephanie let out a cold, mocking laugh.

"Call them. Who do you think they'll believe? Your crazy mother who can barely remember her own name, or me? If you throw me out, Kevin, I will take half of everything you own. And don't forget, your mother signed her power of attorney over to me last month."

The revelation hit Kevin like a physical blow. He had trusted Stephanie to handle the legal paperwork for Irene's care, never imagining she would manipulate his mother into signing away her rights. Stephanie smirked, believing she had won. She didn't realize that Kevin's protective instincts had already driven him to take precautions he had never hoped to use.
