The sterile smell of the hospital room did little to soothe Police Captain Sarah’s frayed nerves. Looking down at her younger sister, Chloe, who lay fragile and pale in a rigid neck brace, Sarah felt a familiar surge of protective fury. Chloe had barely survived a horrific car crash the night before—a crash that Sarah knew was no accident. She unleashed a swift, brutal combination of punches to Mark’s jaw, followed by a powerful high kick straight to his chest. The force of the blow sent him stumbling backward, gasping for air, straight into the arms of the recovering SWAT officer who tackled him out into the corridor. Inside the room, Chloe collapsed back onto the mattress, sobbing hysterically into her hands as the chaotic sounds of the struggle faded down the hallway, leaving Sarah standing guard, breathing heavily.
