A Stormy Night in the ER

The rain beat mercilessly against the tall glass windows of the emergency room, casting long, watery shadows across the sterile tiled floor. Nurse Clara Miller adjusted her scrubs, preparing for what promised to be a long, exhausting night shift. The storm outside had already caused several accidents, and the atmosphere in the hospital was tense. Suddenly, the automatic double doors slid open with a whoosh, letting in a gust of cold, wet air and the frantic sound of sirens.

Two paramedics clad in tan camouflage tactical gear rushed inside, pushing a gurney at a frantic pace. On the gurney lay a young Caucasian man, unconscious and pale, his military-style clothing stained with mud and blood. But what caught Clara’s eye immediately was the large German Shepherd walking closely beside the gurney. The dog wore a heavy tactical harness and looked alert, its dark eyes darting around the room, fiercely protective of the man on the bed.

Clara stepped forward, her ponytail swaying as she prepared to intercept them. One of the paramedics, his face etched with exhaustion, called out over the din of the hospital.

"He's stable, but the dog wouldn't leave him."
Clara looked at the dog, whose ears perked up as if understanding every word. The animal didn't growl, but its posture made it clear that any attempt to separate them would be met with fierce resistance.
"Bring them both in,"
Clara replied, her voice calm but authoritative as she waved them toward Trauma Room Three.

As they wheeled the patient into the bay, Clara couldn't shake a strange, creeping feeling of familiarity. The dog’s tactical harness bore a faded emblem that she had seen once before, years ago, in a photograph sent from a distant military base. She shook the thought from her head, focusing on her duty as they transferred the patient to the hospital bed.
