Unearthing the Past

Once inside the trauma room, Clara immediately went to work, assessing the patient’s vitals. The German Shepherd, whose harness read 'Rex,' sat perfectly still in the corner, his intelligent eyes locked onto his handler. The paramedics quickly briefed her on the situation. They had found the soldier unconscious in a ravine near the military base, apparently having fallen during the storm.

"He has no wallet on him, just his military gear and the dog,"

one paramedic explained before heading back out into the rain.

Clara nodded and began gently cutting away the wet, muddy jacket to check for chest injuries. As she pulled back the fabric, her fingers brushed against a cold piece of metal hanging around the soldier's neck. She pulled out the dog tags to read his name. The silver metal caught the harsh fluorescent lights of the ER, and as Clara read the engraved letters, her breath hitched in her throat. The name read: Captain Lucas Vance.

Clara felt the room spin. Lucas Vance was a name she had spent the last two years trying to forget. He was the commanding officer who had led the mission where her younger brother, Tommy, had tragically lost his life. The official military report had blamed Lucas for negligence, claiming he had abandoned his unit under fire. Clara had harbored a deep, burning resentment toward this man, holding him responsible for her family's ruin.

Tears welled in Clara’s eyes as she stared down at the man who had supposedly betrayed her brother. She reached into his vest pocket to retrieve any medical history, but her hand brushed against a small, waterproof notebook. Tucked inside was a folded, yellowed letter. With trembling hands, Clara opened it and recognized the handwriting instantly. It was Tommy’s. "Clara, if you're reading this, it means I didn't make it. But please know that Captain Vance is a hero. He stayed with me. They are trying to cover up the contractor's failure and blame him..."
