Seventy-two-year-old Beatrice knelt on the cold, hard pine wood floor, her worn hands gripping a rough sponge. Every movement sent a dull, throbbing ache through her lower back, but she didn't dare stop. Wearing her favorite soft tan cardigan, which was now stained with dirty water, she kept her head down. Beatrice had once been a proud schoolteacher, but now, in her twilight years, she felt like a ghost in her own son’s house.

Behind her, the soft rustle of a peach-colored summer dress signaled the arrival of her tormentor. Sarah, her slender, blonde daughter-in-law, crept silently across the luminous living room. James rushed into the frame like a hurricane, his arms outstretched. With a powerful shove, he pushed Sarah away from his mother. Caught completely off guard, Sarah lost her balance, her designer sandals slipping on the wet pine. She tripped backward over the heavy blue bucket of soapy water, crashing heavily onto the hardwood floor in a chaotic splash of dirty suds.
