The Ghost in Aisle Four

The fluorescent lights of the wholesale warehouse buzzed overhead, casting a sterile glow over the towering shelves. Sarah adjusted the collar of her dark grey blazer, her mind drifting through a mundane mental checklist of groceries and chores. It was a Tuesday afternoon, the kind of ordinary day that usually blended into the background of a quiet life. But in an instant, the ordinary shattered into a million pieces.

Standing near the bulk home goods section, Sarah froze. A few yards away, a middle-aged man in a simple blue t-shirt was examining a box. He had the same broad shoulders, the same slight slouch, and the exact same sandy-brown hair as Mark. But that was impossible. Mark, her husband of twelve years, had disappeared five years ago during a solo camping trip in the Rockies. After an exhaustive search, the authorities had declared him dead. Sarah had spent years drowning in grief, struggling to raise their daughter, Lily, alone while drowning in the debts Mark had left behind.

"Mark?"
she whispered, the name catching in her throat like dry ash. She took a hesitant step forward, her heart hammering against her ribs.

As if hearing the ghost of his name, the man stiffened. He didn't turn to face her fully. Instead, he gripped the handle of his shopping cart, pivoted sharply, and began pushing it down the aisle, away from her. His hasty retreat was all the confirmation Sarah needed. It was him. The way he walked, the nervous tension in his shoulders—it was Mark, alive and breathing.

"Mark, wait!"
Sarah cried out, finding her voice. She took two steps to pursue him when a sudden, deafening roar echoed through the warehouse loading zone. A white hatchback came speeding across the foreground, its tires screeching against the polished concrete. Customers screamed as the car veered dangerously close, cutting Sarah off and forcing her to jump backward. By the time the vehicle sped away and the chaos settled, the aisle was empty. Mark was gone.
