Previously: When Sarah spotted her husband, who had been declared dead five years ago, pushing a shopping cart in a wholesale warehouse, she thought she was losing her mind. Then the real nightmare began.

The Web of Deceit

Adrenaline surged through Sarah’s veins, erasing the shock of the near-miss with the speeding hatchback. She didn't care about the reckless driver; her entire existence was now focused on finding the man who had abandoned her. She sprinted down the parallel aisle, her heels clicking loudly against the concrete floor. She searched frantically past the electronics, the bakery, and finally, near the checkout lanes, she spotted the blue t-shirt.

She marched up to him, grabbing his arm with a grip of pure steel. "Mark," she breathed, her voice trembling with a mixture of rage and profound sorrow. "Look at me."

The man slowly turned. His face, older now and lined with new wrinkles, went completely pale. He looked around frantically, as if searching for an escape route, before realizing there was none.

"Sarah, please,"
he whispered, his voice cracking.
"Don't do this here. You don't understand. I had to leave. I had no choice."

Sarah stared at him, tears finally spilling over her eyelashes.

"No choice? We searched for you for months! Lily cried herself to sleep every night! I lost the house, Mark! I had to work three jobs to pay off the secret loans you took out!"

Mark looked genuinely pained, reaching out a hand, but Sarah flinched away.

"I had gambling debts, Sarah,"
he lied smoothly, his eyes pleading.
"Dangerous people were threatening my life. If I didn't disappear, they would have come after you and Lily. I did it to protect you."

For a fleeting second, Sarah wanted to believe him. She wanted to believe that his abandonment was an act of tragic love. But then, her eyes drifted down to his left hand. Resting on his ring finger was a brand-new, polished gold band. Before she could process this, a young, attractive woman pushing a stroller approached them, holding a toddler’s hand.

"Honey, is everything okay?"
the woman asked, looking at Sarah with confusion.
"Who is this?"

the woman asked, looking at Sarah with confusion. "Who is this?"
