A Silent Protector Steps In When A High School Bully Crosses The Line
The Rain and the Ruin
The asphalt of Oakridge High's parking lot was slick with a cold autumn rain. Under the heavy, grey overcast sky, the atmosphere felt suffocating. Olivia scrambled on her knees, her fingers trembling as she tried to gather her soaked textbooks and scattered papers. Seconds earlier, Wyatt, the school’s notorious golden-boy bully, had deliberately shoulder-checked her, sending her sprawling into a dirty puddle. Dressed in his dark red varsity jacket, Wyatt stood over her, a cruel smirk plastered across his face. Surrounding them, a crowd of students watched in hushed silence, none of them brave enough to challenge the captain of the football team.
“Watch where you’re going, Olivia,” Wyatt sneered, kicking a stray notebook further into the water. “Or maybe you just like being on your knees.” The crowd rippled with nervous, stifled laughter. Olivia bit her lip, refusing to let the tears spill over. She knew that showing weakness only fed his cruelty. She reached for her English essay, but a heavy sneaker stepped right on the paper, tearing it in half.
“Oops, my bad,” Wyatt laughed, looking around for approval.
But the laughter died instantly as a heavy silence fell over the parking lot. A tall, broad-shouldered man in a charcoal grey hoodie and a tan cap was walking purposefully through the parting crowd. Cole had been waiting in his truck to pick up his younger sister when he witnessed the ugly scene. He didn't know Olivia, but he knew the face of a coward all too well. Walking up from behind, his boots thudding softly against the wet pavement, Cole intervened.
He stepped directly between Wyatt and Olivia, his massive frame completely eclipsing the boy. Cole looked down at Olivia, his expression softening. “You okay, kiddo?” he asked quietly. She nodded, stunned. Cole turned back to face Wyatt. The blonde bully tried to maintain his arrogant stance, but as Cole stepped in tight, their faces inches apart, Wyatt’s smirk began to falter. Cole’s bearded face was set in stone, his eyes cold and unwavering.
“You think you're tough, huh?” Cole said firmly, his voice vibrating with a quiet, dangerous intensity. “Pick on someone who can stand up to you.”
