Under the weight of Cole’s gaze and the silent judgment of his peers, Wyatt finally broke. Trembling, he looked down at the muddy ground. With a shaky hand, he reached into his pocket, pulled out a dry towel from his gym bag, and handed it to Olivia. “I’m sorry,” he muttered, his voice barely audible. “I’m sorry, Olivia.” Cole watched him closely, ensuring the apology was genuine before nodding. “Go on. Get out of here,” Cole warned. Wyatt didn't have to be told twice; he scrambled into his car and sped out of the parking lot, his reign of terror effectively shattered.

As the crowd began to disperse, talking excitedly about the dramatic downfall of the school's biggest bully, Cole turned his attention back to Olivia. He gently took the wet, ruined books from her arms and helped her wipe them down. Olivia looked up at him, her eyes filled with gratitude, but also confusion. “Thank you,” she whispered. “But... how did you know my name? And why did you help me?”

Cole smiled softly, removing his tan cap to reveal a scar near his temple. “Your brother, Marcus, was my best friend in the army,” Cole explained gently. “Before he passed away last year, he made me promise that if I ever ended up back in this town, I’d look out for his little sister. I promised him I’d always have your back.” Tears finally welled in Olivia's eyes, but this time, they were tears of relief. She wasn't alone anymore. She had a guardian angel watching over her, keeping a sacred promise made miles away.

“You don't ever have to be afraid of people like him again,” Cole said, handing her a fresh notebook from his truck. “You've got a protector now.”

True strength is never found in bringing others down, but in standing up for those who cannot stand up for themselves.
