Hostage on the Court

The sky over the local neighborhood park was a heavy, suffocating shade of grey. What should have been a quiet afternoon was shattered by a desperate scream. On the cracked asphalt of the basketball court, Marcus stood with his arm locked tightly around Chloe’s neck. His eyes darted around like a cornered animal, his clean-shaven face flushed with panic. He wore a dark grey hoodie, his knuckles white as he held the terrified blonde woman in a vice-like grip.

"Get back! I swear I'll do it!" Marcus yelled, his voice cracking under the immense pressure.

Chloe, dressed in a simple green sweater, could barely breathe. Tears streamed down her face, her eyes locked onto the one man she never expected to see here: Jack. Standing a few yards away, Jack looked like a mountain. A stocky older man with a stern, bearded face, he wore his patched leather vest proudly—the mark of a lifetime spent on the open road. He didn’t flinch. His voice was a low, commanding rumble that seemed to shake the very ground beneath them.

"Let her go," Jack ordered, his gaze piercing through Marcus.

In a trembling, barely audible whisper, Chloe gasped, "Dad." It had been years since she had called him that, years of estrangement and unanswered questions. But before Jack could take a step, Leo, a smug young man in a maroon varsity jacket, casually took a sip from a can of soda and scoffed.

"Hey old man, this ain't your business," Leo sneered, tossing the can aside. "Take that leather patch somewhere else."

Jack’s eyes slowly shifted to Leo, his expression hardening into stone. The casual disrespect was the spark to a powder keg. Jack stepped forward, his boots heavy on the asphalt.

"You just made it my business," Jack warned, his voice dripping with icy promise.

Jack warned, his voice dripping with icy promise.
