How a Terrified Girl in a Stormy Diner Found Her Father's Old Brothers
A Refuge in the Storm
The rain lashed against the neon-lit windows of the Route 9 diner, blurring the headlights of the passing trucks on the lonely highway. Inside, the air smelled of stale coffee and fried onions. It was the kind of place where people went to get lost, or to avoid being found. For Lily, a petite brunette shivering in a damp pink t-shirt, it was her last hope. Her heart hammered against her ribs as she looked through the glass doors at the dark sedan parked across the street, its headlights cutting through the deluge.
Desperate, Lily turned toward the counter. A group of burly, leather-clad bikers sat huddled over their mugs, their imposing figures casting long shadows under the warm overhead lamps. Taking a deep breath, she approached the largest of themβa muscular, bald man with a thick beard and a faded skull tattoo stretching down his arm. She tapped him gently on the shoulder.
"Um, sir?" she whispered, her voice trembling.
The man slowly turned his head, his sharp eyes sizing her up. Despite his intimidating frame, there was a weary kindness in his gaze.
"What is it, kid?" Jax asked, his gravelly voice cutting through the hum of the diner's jukebox.
Lily swallowed hard, her eyes darting back to the entrance. The rain was drumming harder now, a relentless assault on the glass.
"Look back," she pleaded softly.
Jax glanced toward the door, his eyes narrowing as he spotted the black sedan idling in the shadows. His posture stiffened immediately. He recognized that car, and more importantly, he recognized the threat it posed to someone so young and defenseless.
"Right. Stay close," Jax muttered, his tone instantly shifting to one of absolute authority.
He stood up, his massive frame towering over Lily. With a nod, he began leading her down the checkered aisle toward the back booth. Behind him, Cole and the other bikers slid off their stools, their heavy boots thudding against the linoleum. Jax looked ahead protectively, his jaw set.
"Nobody touches her," Jax declared to his crew.
"We know," Cole responded, his hand resting instinctively near his belt.
