Previously: When a terrified young woman sought refuge in a remote diner during a storm, she didn't realize the rugged bikers inside held the key to her late father's deepest secret.

The Shadows of the Past

The bell above the diner door chimed, a sharp sound that was instantly swallowed by the roar of the thunder. Three men in heavy dark coats stepped inside, water dripping from their collars. Their eyes scanned the diner, bypassing the waitress and the elderly couple in the corner, landing directly on Lily, who was huddled behind Jax's massive shoulders. The leader of the trio, a scarred man named Marcus, smiled coldly.

"Well, well. We didn't mean to cause a scene," Marcus said, stepping forward. "We're just here to take what belongs to us. Step aside, old man."

Jax didn't flinch. Instead, he crossed his muscular arms, his chest rising and falling slowly. The air in the diner grew thick with tension. Cole shifted to Jax's left, his knuckles turning white. The rest of the bikers formed an impenetrable wall of leather and steel, completely blocking Lily from view.

"She doesn't want to go with you," Jax said, his voice dangerously low. "And around here, we don't let people take what isn't theirs."

Marcus laughed, a dry, humorless sound. "You don't know who she is, biker. Her father owed some very dangerous people a lot of money before he kicked the bucket. She's going to pay his debt, one way or another."

As Lily shrank back, her hand flew to her collarbone, clutching a silver locket that hung around her neck. In her panic, the clasp broke, and the locket clattered onto the checkered floor, popping open. Jax glanced down at the small object. Inside the silver frame was a faded photograph of a young, smiling biker standing next to a classic chopper, his arm wrapped around a toddler.

Jaxโ€™s heart stopped. He knew that face. He knew that bike. It was Thomas, his former club president and closest friend, who had vanished fifteen years ago under mysterious circumstances. Jax looked up from the photo to Lily's terrified eyes, realizing the truth in a sudden, blinding flash of clarity.

"Thomas," Jax whispered, his voice cracking with an emotion none of his men had ever heard before. "You're Thomas's little girl."
