The rhythmic scrubbing of heavy denim against the washboard was the only sound that broke the afternoon stillness of the rustic country yard. Rachel wiped a stray lock of light brown hair from her forehead with a soapy forearm, her apron damp from the cool well water. For seven years, this simple, quiet life had been her sanctuary. She had traded the glittering, suffocating high-society world of the city for the honest dirt of this American countryside, hoping the ghosts of her past would never find her.

But peace is a fragile thing. The low, heavy rumble of an engine shattered the quiet. Rachel froze, her hands sinking into the soapy water as a sleek, black sedan turned onto the gravel driveway, kicking up a cloud of dust. Her heart hammered against her ribs. No one ever came out here. As the car stopped near the wooden fence where neighbors occasionally gathered, the tinted window rolled down, and the silhouette inside made her breath catch in her throat.

She stood up slowly, her knees trembling. “It’s you,” she whispered, the words barely escaping her lips.

The driver’s door opened, and Vincent stepped out. He looked entirely out of place in the rustic yard, wearing a perfectly tailored dark navy suit, his clean-cut features hardened by years of searching. His eyes locked onto hers, filled with a complex mixture of anger, relief, and sorrow. Before either of them could speak, the screen door of the porch creaked open.

Cole, a bright-eyed seven-year-old boy wearing faded overalls, walked forward onto the grass. He looked at the stranger, then at his mother’s pale face. “Mom?” the boy asked softly, sensing the sudden tension in the air.
