Previously: When Rachel’s wealthy ex-husband tracked her down in her remote country home, he didn't come for her. He came for the little boy he never knew existed.

The Truth Unearthed

The silence that followed Vincent’s question was deafening. Rachel quickly stepped between Vincent and Cole, her maternal instincts kicking in. She gently guided Cole back toward the porch, whispering for him to go inside and play. Once the screen door clicked shut, she turned back to face the man who had once been her entire world.

“You shouldn’t have come here, Vincent,” Rachel said, her voice shaking but resolute. “You have no right to barge into our lives after all this time.”

Vincent took another step closer, his eyes pleading. “No right? Rachel, you vanished without a word! I woke up one morning and the woman I loved was gone. I spent years searching for you, thinking I had done something wrong, only to find you living in the middle of nowhere with a son who looks exactly like me. Why did you hide him from me?”

The pain in his voice was real, but so was the anger that had fueled Rachel’s flight. She scoffed, a bitter laugh escaping her lips. “Don't play the victim, Vincent. I found the documents in your study. I saw your family's prenuptial agreement drafts—the ones your mother prepared, stating that if we had a child, they would have full custody if we ever divorced. I knew your family would take my baby away the moment they deemed me ‘unfit’ for your high-society standards.”

Vincent froze, his face turning pale.

“My mother did what? Rachel, I never signed those. I never would have allowed that!”

Rachel shook her head, tears finally spilling over her cheeks. “I couldn't risk it, Vincent. Your family’s wealth is a weapon, and I was just a girl from a working-class neighborhood. I had to protect my baby. So, I ran.”

The realization of his family’s betrayal hit Vincent like a physical blow. He looked back at the house, where Cole was watching them through the window, completely unaware of the storm brewing outside.
