Chloe had always known the scrapyard was a place where things went to die, but she never expected it to hold a living secret. The cold morning air bit at her face as she sifted through the rusted iron and twisted steel that her late father had left behind. At twenty-four, she was drowning in his debts, desperately hunting for anything of value to keep the bank from seizing the land.

Suddenly, a strange sound broke the silence. She froze, her breath hitching in her throat as she looked around the desolate heaps of metal.

"Who's that?" she whispered, her voice trembling.

No one answered, but the eerie feeling of being watched crept up her spine. She took a step forward, peering into the shadows. "Someone?" she called out, but only the wind whistled through the hollow pipes.

Her boots crunched on the gravel as she moved toward a towering stack of discarded shipping containers. Behind them lay a massive, old wooden crate, bound tightly with thick, coarse ropes that looked freshly knotted. A faint, muffled whimper emanated from the wood. Her heart hammered against her ribs. She leaned in, her cheek almost touching the rough timber.

"Help her," she breathed, a sudden, instinctual panic seizing her.

She looked closer at the seam of the crate. It was nailed shut, but there were small air holes drilled near the top. There's someone inside, she realized, her wide, panicked eyes staring at the dark wood in sheer disbelief. Her dirty hand reached for the coarse ropes as she pleaded, "Please," trying to find a way to tear them apart.

Suddenly—BANG!

A violent, desperate thud rattled the heavy wood from the inside, making Chloe scream and jump back. Someone was trapped in there, fighting for their lives, and time was running out.
