Previously: While searching through her late father's desolate scrapyard, Chloe makes a chilling discovery bound in thick ropes—and the truth behind it hits far too close to home.

The Dark Truth Unveiled

Adrenaline surged through Chloe’s veins, erasing her fear. She grabbed a rusted crowbar from her tool bag and wedged it under the lid, throwing all her weight onto the metal bar. With a screech of protesting nails, the wood splintered. She threw the heavy lid aside and tore away the thick ropes.

Inside, huddled in the darkness, was a young girl. She was shivering violently, her hands bound and a thick cloth gagging her mouth. Chloe recognized her instantly from the missing person posters plastered all over town. It was Lily Vance, the eight-year-old daughter of Julian Vance, the wealthy developer who had been trying to buy Chloe's scrapyard for months.

"It's okay, you're safe now," Chloe whispered frantically as she pulled the gag from the girl’s mouth and sliced the ropes binding her wrists. Before Lily could speak, a shadow fell over the crate. The heavy crunch of footsteps on gravel made Chloe's blood run cold. She pushed Lily back down into the crate, shielding her with her own body.

"I told you to stay away from this section, Chloe," a familiar voice callously cut through the damp air.

Chloe spun around, her jaw dropping. Standing there, holding a heavy wrench, was Marcus—her estranged older brother.

"Marcus? What have you done?" Chloe gasped, her voice trembling. "Is this why you came back?"

Marcus sighed, stepping closer, his eyes hollow and desperate. "You don't understand, Chloe. Vance was going to take this place anyway. He was going to ruin us. I did this for us! Once he pays the ransom, we clear dad's debts and we get to keep our home. Just walk away. Pretend you never saw anything."

Chloe stared at her brother, horrified by the monster he had become. The betrayal cut deeper than any blade. She stood firmly between him and the trembling child, refusing to back down.

Chloe whispered frantically as she pulled the gag from the girl’s mouth and sliced the ropes binding her wrists.
