The autumn wind bit sharply through Matthew’s expensive grey suit, but his mind wasn't on the cold. For the past three weeks, his nightly walk home from the corporate office had been defined by a single, recurring encounter. On the dim urban sidewalk, standing beneath the flickering amber glow of a streetlamp, was Chloe. She was only nineteen, with messy dark brown hair and a face smudged with the soot of the city streets, wearing a frayed denim jacket that offered little protection against the elements.

Like every night before, Matthew stepped forward and handed her a warm, white takeout box filled with fresh food from a nearby diner. Chloe’s face lit up, a fleeting moment of pure gratitude breaking through her exhaustion.

"Thank you, sir," she whispered, her voice trembling slightly.

Matthew smiled warmly, trying to offer whatever comfort he could. "You're welcome, Chloe. Make sure you eat it while it's hot."

With a quick nod, Chloe clutched the box to her chest and ran off into the darkness. Matthew stood frozen on the sidewalk. A nagging worry had been clawing at his chest for days. He had never once seen her take a bite. "Why doesn't she ever eat?" he whispered to himself, the concern suddenly overwhelming his hesitation.

Driven by an impulse he couldn't explain, Matthew turned and followed her. He ran down the dark, cobbled alleyway, keeping his footsteps quiet as he tracked the fading silhouette of her denim jacket. He watched her slip through a rusted iron door into a cramped, dilapidated building. Peering through the cracked window of a dimly lit, damp room, his breath caught in his throat.

Inside, Chloe was carefully pouring the contents of the takeout box into a small metal pot. Surrounding her were three small, hollow-eyed children and an elderly woman, Maria, wrapped in a threadbare blanket. One of the younger siblings looked up with wide, hopeful eyes.

"Did you get food, Chloe?" the little boy asked quietly.
"Yes," Chloe replied with a bright, forced smile. She handed the container to the elderly woman. "You eat, Mama. I already ate at school today."

Outside, tears welled in Matthew's eyes and began streaming down his face. He gripped the cold brick wall, his heart shattering into pieces. "That's a lie," he whispered into the night. He knew for a fact there was no school, and no food waiting for her.
