A Ghost from the Past

Matthew couldn't just stand in the shadows and watch this family starve. Taking a deep breath, he pushed open the creaking wooden door. The sudden sound made Chloe whip around, her eyes widening in sheer panic as she instinctively stepped in front of the younger children, shielding them with her own fragile body.

"Who are you? What do you want?" Chloe gasped, her voice defensive and sharp. "Please, we don't have anything of value."

Matthew raised his hands in a peaceful gesture, stepping slowly into the dim, cold room. "I’m not here to hurt you, Chloe. I promise. I'm the man from the street. I... I followed you because I was worried. I saw what you did." He looked at the meager portion of food being shared among five people. "You didn't eat anything."

Before Chloe could answer, a raspy, weak voice echoed from the corner of the room. The elderly woman, Maria, leaned forward into the weak light of a single hanging bulb. She squinted at Matthew, her frail hands trembling as she reached for her worn glasses. As she put them on, her breath hitched, and her eyes filled with sudden, overwhelming tears.

"Matthew?" Maria whispered, her voice cracking with emotion. "My God... is that really you?"

Matthew froze, his heart pounding against his ribs. He looked closely at the elderly woman's lined face, searching his memories. Suddenly, a wave of recognition crashed over him. The structure of her cheekbones, the deep green of her eyes—they were unmistakable. This wasn't a stranger. This was Maria, the loyal housekeeper who had practically raised him and his late brother, Thomas, after their parents passed away decades ago.

Twenty years ago, after a bitter family dispute orchestrated by Matthew's greedy uncle, Maria had been unjustly fired and blacklisted, vanishing without a trace. Matthew had searched for her for years, but she had completely disappeared. And now, here she was, living in squalor, raising his late brother's secret grandchildren.

"Maria..." Matthew choked out, dropping to his knees beside her worn mattress. "How did you end up here? And these children..."
