They Humiliated Her for Her Scars Until a General Stepped Forward
The crystal chandeliers of the Grand Archmont Ballroom caught every glint of Victoria’s grey sequined gown as she cornered Clara Sterling. Clara, standing quietly in a simple, unadorned white silk shirt amidst a sea of designer ballgowns, looked entirely out of place. To Victoria and the elite crowd of wealthy guests, she was an intruder, a charity case who had somehow slipped past the guest list. Victoria’s laughter cut through the ambient classical music like shattered glass. With a sudden, vicious movement, Victoria grabbed the collar of Clara’s white silk shirt and pulled it down, exposing Clara’s back to the entire room.
Two massive, jagged X-shaped scars marred the smooth skin of Clara's back.
"Look at the freak! Just scars!"
Victoria shrieked, her voice high-pitched and mocking.
The ballroom fell into a stunned, suffocating silence. Dozens of wealthy eyes locked onto the disfigurement. Julian, the wealthy host of the evening, stepped forward with his face twisted in disgust.
"Security, remove her,"
Julian commanded, pointing a finger toward the grand double doors.
Clara didn't flinch. She slowly pulled her shirt back up, her expression calm, cold, and entirely unbroken. Before the security guards could take a single step, the heavy doors of the ballroom swung open. A tall, imposing figure stepped into the light. It was General Vance, a highly decorated military leader whose chest was covered in medals of valor. The crowd parted instantly in respect. General Vance walked past Julian, completely ignoring his outstretched hand. He stopped directly in front of Clara, raised his hand to his brow, and delivered a crisp, flawless salute.
"Captain Sterling. Welcome home,"
the General said, his voice echoing with deep respect. A collective gasp rippled through the room. Victoria’s jaw dropped, and Julian froze, his finger still pointing toward the door.
