Previously: When a wealthy socialite publicly humbles a quiet young woman at a high-society gala, she has no idea that the scars she is mocking belong to a decorated war hero.

The Secret Behind the Scars

The silence in the grand ballroom was deafening as General Vance lowered his hand. The wealthy elite, who just moments ago had sneered at Clara, now looked on in utter bewilderment. Julian swallowed hard, his arrogant composure instantly crumbling in the presence of the legendary military commander.

"General Vance,"

Julian stammered, stepping forward.

"There must be some mistake. This woman is a trespasser. She is... disfigured. She doesn't belong here."

General Vance turned a piercing glare toward Julian, the warmth in his eyes instantly freezing into steel.

"A mistake, Julian?"

the General’s voice boomed, silencing the whispers.

"The only mistake here is the disgraceful behavior of your guests. Captain Clara Sterling does not need an invitation to any room in this country. She has earned her place in history."

Victoria stepped back, her face turning as pale as her grey sequins.

"A captain?"

she whispered, her voice trembling.

"But those horrible scars..."

General Vance walked over to Victoria, his presence towering over her.

"Those scars, young lady, are the reason you are standing in this air-conditioned ballroom tonight,"

he said, his tone dripping with quiet fury.

"Two years ago, Captain Sterling led a high-risk rescue mission behind enemy lines. When her transport vehicle was hit, she refused to retreat. She dragged three wounded soldiers out of a burning wreckage under heavy fire."

The crowd gasped. Clara stood perfectly still, her chin held high, though a flicker of painful memory crossed her eyes.

"She sustained those injuries saving the lives of my men,"

General Vance continued, turning back to the shocked crowd.

"She was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. Those are not 'freakish scars,' Victoria. Those are the marks of a true American hero."

Whispers of shame washed over the ballroom. Guests who had previously snickered now looked down at the floor, unable to meet Clara’s steady gaze.
