A Plea for Crumbs

The sweet aroma of freshly baked cinnamon rolls and warm sourdough drifted through the cozy neighborhood bakery, but for seven-year-old Logan, the scent was a painful reminder of his empty stomach. Clutching his shivering toddler sister, Olivia, close to his chest, the young boy tried to blend into the shadows. His face was smudged with dirt, and his oversized jacket offered little protection against the biting autumn wind outside. Olivia was whimpering, her tiny tears leaving clean streaks on her dusty cheeks.

Summoning all his courage, Logan approached the polished wooden counter. He looked up at the young clerk, Amanda, who was busy arranging golden pastries. Amanda had her light brown hair tied back in a neat ponytail and wore a clean apron. "Excuse me, ma'am," Logan whispered, his voice trembling. "Do you have any bread from yesterday that you sell for less? Just a little bit?"

Amanda paused, looking down at the disheveled children with a cold, dismissive expression. Without a hint of sympathy, she flatly replied,

"We don't sell leftovers here. If you can't pay full price, you need to leave."

Olivia let out a loud, heartbroken sob, her tiny fingers gripping Logan’s worn collar. Logan's heart sank. He had failed his sister. But before he could turn away in defeat, a deep, commanding voice echoed through the bakery.

"Pack everything."

Amanda gasped, her eyes widening as she looked past Logan. Standing behind the children was Richard, a distinguished older man wearing a dark navy wool coat. His presence was commanding, his eyes sharp yet filled with a sudden, intense determination. Amanda stammered,

"Sir?"
but Richard merely stepped closer, looking down at the kids with a gaze that softened instantly.
"Everything,"
he firmly repeated.
"Come with me, kids."
Logan looked up, his wide, hopeful eyes filled with sudden surprise.
