Richard led Logan and Olivia to a quiet, warm diner just down the street. He carried the heavy boxes of pastries and fresh bread himself, placing them gently on the booth table. Within minutes, the table was filled with warm soup, hot chocolate, and soft rolls. Logan watched in disbelief, hesitantly taking a bite before helping feed his sister. Richard sat across from them, his heart aching at the sight of their hunger.

"Eat as much as you want, young man,"

Richard said softly.

"You don't have to worry about tonight."

As Logan reached for a glass of milk, a small, rusted silver locket slipped out from beneath his thin shirt. It dangled over the table, catching the warm light of the diner. Richard’s breath caught in his throat. His hands began to tremble as he stared at the unique, hand-carved rose pattern on the metal casing. He knew that locket. He had bought it fifty years ago for Clara, his high school sweetheart, before he was drafted into the military and they were tragically forced apart by her disapproving parents.

"Son,"

Richard choked out, his voice barely a whisper.

"Where did you get that locket?"

Logan tucked it back protectively, his eyes filled with caution.

"It belonged to my grandmother, Clara,"

Logan said quietly.

"She passed away last year. She told me to keep it safe and never lose it. She said it was the only beautiful thing she had left from her youth."

Richard felt a tear slip down his weathered cheek. Clara had passed away, but her grandchildren were standing right in front of him, abandoned and starving on the very streets he walked every day.
