Her Scars Were Mocked at a High-Society Gala Until a Decorated General Saluted Her
The Humiliation
The Grand Ballroom of the Vance Manor was a vision of glittering crystal chandeliers, flowing champagne, and the whispers of the city’s most elite. Valerie Sterling stood near the edge of the crowd, her simple white silk blouse and neatly tied brown ponytail contrasting sharply with the extravagant evening gowns surrounding her. She had not wanted to come, but a promise to her late father forced her to face the wolves tonight.
Suddenly, a sharp laugh cut through the ambient chatter. It was Evelyn Vance, the host’s daughter, stunning but vicious in a grey sequined dress that shimmered like a snake's skin. "What is a charity case doing at our family gala?" Evelyn sneered, loud enough to draw a crowd. "And wearing a cheap blouse to hide her hideous secrets?"
Before Valerie could step back, Evelyn lunged forward. With a cruel, swift yank, she pulled down the collar of Valerie's blouse. The fabric tore, exposing Valerie’s bare back to the entire ballroom. A collective gasp rippled through the room. Running across her skin were massive, jagged, X-shaped scars.
"Look at the freak! Just scars!" Evelyn shrieked, pointing and laughing.
Valerie froze, her face pale but her posture rigid. The whispers grew deafening. Within seconds, Richard Vance, the billionaire host in a pristine tuxedo, marched over, his face twisted in disgust.
"Security, remove her immediately! We don't allow eyesores in this establishment," Richard roared, pointing toward the exit.
Two burly security guards advanced. Valerie closed her eyes, bracing for the humiliation. But before the guards could touch her, the heavy double doors of the ballroom swung open. A towering figure in a heavily decorated military dress uniform stepped through the crowd. It was General Bradley, a legendary war hero and the guest of honor.
The room fell dead silent. General Bradley walked past the snickering Evelyn and the smug Richard, stopping directly in front of Valerie. Slowly, he raised his hand to his brow in a crisp, deeply respectful salute.
"Captain Sterling. Welcome home," General Bradley said, his voice echoing with absolute authority.
