Previously: When a cruel socialite exposed a young woman's severe scars to humiliate her at a gala, she expected her ruin. Instead, a legendary General stepped forward with a salute.

The Hero Revealed

The silence in the ballroom was suffocating. Evelyn's mocking smile evaporated, and Richard’s hand remained frozen in mid-air, still pointing toward the door. The guests looked between the legendary General Bradley and the young woman they had just branded an eyesore.

Valerie opened her eyes, looked at her former commander, and returned the salute with perfect military precision. "Thank you, General," she said, her voice steady and devoid of the fear they expected.

Richard cleared his throat, trying to regain control of the room. "General Bradley, surely there is some mistake. This girl is an intruder, a servant... and look at her. She is a disturbance to our guests."

General Bradley slowly turned his head, his gaze cold enough to freeze water. "A mistake, Richard? The only mistake here is your profound ignorance. You are looking at Captain Valerie Sterling, a highly decorated operative of the United States Special Forces."

The crowd gasped. Evelyn stepped back, clutching her pearls. "Special Forces? But... those hideous scars..."

"Those 'hideous scars,' Miss Vance, are the result of shrapnel from an improvised explosive device," General Bradley barked, his voice booming through the silent room. "Captain Sterling received those scars while shielding three of her fellow soldiers from a blast during a classified rescue mission. A mission that saved my own nephew's life."

A wave of shame washed over the ballroom. Guests who had been whispering cruel jokes moments ago now looked down at the floor, unable to meet Valerie's eyes. Richard's face turned a pale shade of gray. He realized he had just publicly humiliated a national hero in front of the city's most influential figures.

"I demand an apology," the General said, stepping closer to Richard. "To Captain Sterling, and to the uniform she served."

But Valerie didn't care about their apologies. She adjusted her torn blouse, looking directly at Richard with a cold, knowing smile. "Don't bother, General," Valerie said quietly. "Richard Vance has much bigger things to worry about tonight than a torn shirt."
