A Terrifying Warning in the Park

The autumn wind rustled the dry red oak leaves across the park path, but the chill Robert felt had nothing to do with the weather. He sat on the rustic wooden bench, his arm draped protectively around his twelve-year-old daughter, Grace. Behind her dark, oversized sunglasses, Grace’s face was pale and still. Her small hands gripped a wooden walking cane. Six months ago, a mysterious illness had stolen her sight, leaving Robert devastated and desperate.

Suddenly, a shadow fell over them. It was Liam, a messy-haired boy from the neighborhood who wore a dirty grey sweater. He leaned in close, his eyes darting around.

"What did you just say?"

Robert asked, his voice shaking with disbelief.

"Your daughter isn't blind,"

Liam declared, his voice flat and certain.

Robert stammered, his heart hammering against his ribs.

"What? That's impossible. The doctors—"
"I saw her look,"

Liam whispered, cutting him off.

Panicking, Robert reached out and gripped the boy's shoulders, demanding,

"How do you know this? Why are you watching us?"
"I sleep near your house,"

Liam confessed, glancing toward the woods bordering Robert's property.

"I see things."

A cold dread settled deep in Robert's chest. His mind raced with a thousand terrifying possibilities.

"What did you see, Liam? Tell me!"

Liam leaned in even closer, his next words shattering Robert's entire world.

"It's your wife. She puts something in her food."

Robert stared at the boy, paralyzed. His wife, Eleanor, was Grace's stepmother. She had been the one tirelessly preparing Grace’s meals, nursing her through her sudden illness. Could the woman he loved be the source of his daughter's suffering?
