The Poison in the Pantry

Robert walked home in a daze, his mind spinning. Beside him, Grace walked silently, tapping her cane against the pavement. He looked at her closely. Was she really faking? How could a child pretend to be blind for months?

That evening, Robert watched Eleanor with hyper-vigilant eyes. She was in the kitchen, humming softly as she ladled chicken soup into Grace's bowl. Just before carrying it to the dining room, Eleanor paused, pulled a small blue vial from her apron pocket, and squeezed three clear drops into the broth.

Robert's blood ran cold. He managed to keep his composure, stepping into the kitchen just as she finished stirring.

"I'll take that to her, honey,"

Robert said, forcing a warm smile.

Eleanor jumped, startled, but quickly recovered her sweet demeanor.

"Oh, thank you, sweetheart. She needs to eat every drop to keep her strength up."

Instead of bringing the soup to Grace, Robert quietly slipped into the hallway bathroom and poured the soup into a sterile glass jar he had hidden in his jacket. He replaced it with plain broth from the pot.

Later that night, after Eleanor had gone to sleep, Robert crept into Grace's bedroom. He sat on the edge of her bed and gently took her hand.

"Grace,"

he whispered.

"You don't have to hide from me anymore. Liam told me what he saw."

For a long moment, there was silence. Then, slowly, Grace reached up and pulled off her dark glasses. In the dim moonlight, her eyes focused directly on his face. Tears welled up in them.

"I'm sorry, Daddy,"

she sobbed, throwing her arms around his neck.

"I had to pretend. If she knew I could see, she would have tried something worse."

Grace confessed that she had caught Eleanor putting drops in her milk months ago. When Grace started losing her vision, she realized it was the food. To protect herself, she began spitting out the meals and pretending the blindness was permanent, hoping Eleanor would stop poisoning her once the "goal" was achieved.
