A Terrifying Truth in the Park

The autumn wind swept through the park, carrying a chill that had nothing to do with the weather. Charles sat on a wooden bench, his heart heavy as he looked at his eight-year-old daughter, Emily. She sat quietly beside him, her small hands gripping a white cane, her eyes hidden behind dark sunglasses. Since the mysterious illness that took her sight six months ago, Charles’s world had revolved around protecting her.

Suddenly, a shadow fell over them. A young boy with a dusty face and a ripped brown coat stepped forward. It was Lucas, a homeless child Charles had occasionally seen wandering the neighborhood. Before Charles could offer him some change, Lucas leaned in, his eyes wide and urgent.

"Your daughter isn't blind," Lucas declared, his voice a sharp whisper.

Charles froze, his breath catching in his throat. He stared at the boy in utter disbelief. "What did you just say?" he stammered, his mind racing.

"I saw her look," Lucas insisted, nodding quickly. "She looked right at a butterfly yesterday when no one was watching."

A mix of anger and desperate hope flared in Charles’s chest. He reached out, gently but firmly gripping Lucas’s shoulders. "How do you know this? Why were you even near my house?"

"I sleep in the alley near your house," Lucas whispered, looking around nervously. "I see things. I see your wife, Evelyn. She puts something in her food. Every single night."

The world seemed to stop spinning. Charles’s face tightened with dread. The memory of Evelyn diligently preparing Emily's special meals flashed through his mind. "What did you see?" he whispered, his voice trembling.

"It's a blue bottle," Lucas said. "She drops it in her soup. Then she tells her she's sick and can't see."

Then she tells her she's sick and can't see."
